Maximizing Thinkpad T480

I never owned a Thinkpad before, but I used Thinkpad since 2008, T400 version from my office, and every 2-3 years got upgrade to the latest.

For my personal daily use, I am happy with my Macbook Pro 13 2011 and Mac mini Server 2012.

Recently, I have my first own Thinkpad T480 (released on April 2019) with standard spec (it’s secondhand btw, with very good condition, and still under warranty up to this month).

Unboxing the T480

I decided to choose the T series (T14, L14, T480 and T490 on my list) and finally with T480 after few months learning the best type to support my works. It’s came with i7 8650U 1.9ghz vPro (8 CPUs), Intel UHD620 4GB, DDR4 8GB, 512GB SSD Sata3, HD display 1366x768, non backlight keyboard, 6-cell external and without wwan and internal batteries.

Then I start to upgrade some parts:

Installing new SSD, RAM and internal battery

Woohooo, it has backlight now

And few days ago I just completed another upgrades:

Have a look, cellular data option is available and my screen is better now!

I did all the installation myself by following the awesome guideline https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Lenovo_ThinkPad_T480 and use Pro Tech Toolkit https://www.ifixit.com/Store/Tools/Pro-Tech-Toolkit/IF145-307 from IFIXIT.

I am quite satisfied and excited, hope it lasts until next 5 years.

Back to work, to support my daily activities on climate analytics and geospatial technology, I installed various application:

  • ArcGIS Desktop 10.8.2

  • ArcGIS Pro 2.9

  • R Statistics 4.1.3 and RStudio

  • Total Commander

  • Windows Subsystem for Linux 2, and GDAL/OGR, CDO, NCO, geopandas, xarray, rasterio, jupyter notebook, etc inside Anaconda.

UPDATE: 4 Jun 2022

I replaced existing Wi-Fi card Intel Model 8265NGW with Intel Killer 6E AX1675x Tri Band AX210 M.2 2230 Bluetooth 5.2 Wi-Fi Card.
